Meetings are normally held monthly on the 4th Monday, with the exception of December, unless otherwise stated. Most meetings are held at "The Vine" Arts & Events Center, 225 W. September 2026: Texas Cotton: Hidden “Weapon” of the Civil War

Our speaker, RICHARD B. McCASLIN, PhD, exposed the overlooked and surprisingly interesting story of Texas cotton's role in the Civil War. Scholars have ignored or dismissed the importance of the cotton trade in Texas at that time. But in fact one-third of all the cotton that left the Confederacy was Texas cotton. Texas and Confederate agencies secured more than $478 million from cotton sales, shipping to buyers in Europe and the northern States. Confederate officials, aware of this, tried to harness the profits for the support of their military. The history of their effort is one of the great untold stories of Texas in the Civil War -- until now. Richard B. McCaslin, PhD, is the Texas State Historian, the Director of Publications for the Texas State Historical Association (TSHA), author or editor of twenty-two books, and a regular favorite speaker of the Grapevine Historical Society.
